Random Rant...

Have you seen Revolutionary Road?
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as the perfect couple

It was the most depressing film what I've seen in a long time.  The characters were very raw and honest, but gee whiz, what a hopeless emotional vortex.  The utter selfishness of the pair of them made me want to punch somebody. The implication that there was nothing more available to make them happy except escaping was overwhelming.

The good thing that did come out of that two hours of my life I'll never get back (thank god I didn't invest in reading the novel.  I'd never recover) was that it made me remember that life really isn't so bad after all.  All we are is what we live from day to day, who we love, the small differences we make.  Life is full of disappointments and punches.  You gotta learn how to take a punch from time to time and then have the grace to get back up and keep going.  That's what this story lacked.  Grace.  I guess that was the point, but still...

I guess that's why I generally prefer anything with Hugh Grant and star rating of 3 or less.  Yes, I keep my standards low (sorry Hugh.  It doesn't mean I think less of you!) but I don't have the emotional capacity to feel this horrible after seeing a film anymore.  I'm a lightweight, and not much of a film intellectual.  But I still love myself, and anything Jane Austen that's made for BBC television.

  1. Ohmigoodness, you took the words right out of my mouth! I too tend to stick with either the very old tried and true formulas of the classic movies, or the under the radar, simple story happy ending is inevitable kind. I can't take all the other crap. Why would anyone voluntarily subject themselves to 2 hours of depression? Geesh!

Btw, I have not yet seen Revolutionary Road - and I'm very thankful for the warning b/c now I will steer clear. Give me an Astaire & Rogers flick anyday. :)
