Summer crafts turned into a jewelry making obsession!

Arizona summers are HOT.  Being from the Pacific Northwest, we are used to milking every bit of a sunny day, from sun up to sun down.  But here in the desert, every day is sunny and when the temperatures reach the triple digits, we avoid the hot sun at all costs.  That means lots of time indoors.

We were looking for a fun craft to keep busy on hot summer days during summer vacation.  I have two girls who absolutely love dress up and go all out with makeup, costumes and accessories (I go a little bonkers with the costumery as well).

My eldest daughter, now 11, is into anything steampunk (especially dress up), so she decided to try her hand at making steampunk-inspired charm necklaces after a visit to the craft store.  I put the word out on Facebook and her first seven pieces were sold within a few hours.  She was very excited and proud of herself and couldn't wait to make and sell some more.

In the past I'd made a few jewelry pieces for Deeds & Petunia, but never delved that deeply into jewelry making.  But in watching her work and helping her along, I discovered I too LOVED the creative process of jewelry designing.  Pretty soon my 9 year old was hooked as well, and before we knew it we had amassed a collection of jewelry that's designed around our love for imaginative play and favorite dress up - woodland/faerie, steampunk, or fable worthy.

We decided to try starting an Etsy shop called Odd Hazel.  The girls would keep making designs as it suited them and I would design alongside, run the shop and sell whatever we dreamed up.

I get to create alongside my daughters which never feels like work.  :)  Looking forward to see how Odd Hazel grows.

Deep Thoughts and Creative Ruts.

Contemplating life with "Blackout" the chicken
Mistakes are hard.  I know the saying "you learn from your mistakes" all too well.  I'm starting to feel like a pro at making mistakes. I'm one of those people who's not afraid of jumping in and trying something.  "You'll learn as you go" is another, and I do.  But there isn't much comfort in those words when something doesn't work out.  Disappointment, shame, failure aren't easy to overcome.

You may have noticed I haven't been blogging for the past couple months.  I've been going through the process of reevaluating where to spend my time and energy.  Having a creative business is fantastic most of the time.  But when you take a look at your time/energy spent vs. what's in your bank account, it can sometimes be a little disheartening. Doing my taxes this year is what made me reflect on why I'm doing Deeds & Petunia and what I want to get out of all this.

My priorities.
My two kids are my #1 priority, of course.  I am so lucky to be able to be here for them and take an active role in their lives as a stay-at-home mom.  I truly believe in the long run it will make a difference.  But they go to school all day and I get bored easily.  Deeds & Petunia started on a whim when I found a bunch of really great vintage trims and notions at an estate sale and I thought "I could sell these online, I bet."  That endeavor to make a little extra money and cure my boredom sparked a fire of creativity in me, and before I knew it I was crafting up a storm.  A friend suggested I try my hand at veil and fascinator making.  It worked out pretty well and I would say I was a fairly successful seller on Etsy for a while.  As a start-up micro-business, I had a positive cash flow in the first two years.  I found great validation in feeling like I was doing something right.

But veils and fascinators are not my passion and I got pretty burned out.  It wasn't a mistake (it was anything but a mistake), but it wasn't fun or flexible anymore.  I found myself counting sales instead of counting all the accomplishments, all the great connections I've made, all the creative growth.   I wanted to move away from wedding accessories and into writing and blogging, and working on becoming more of a creative resource for people.  But I felt like I had no wind in my sails - I couldn't do what it takes to basically start from scratch again.

I knew it was time to take a break.

So of course, I started Real Estate School. (?!?!)

Which I really enjoyed.  I knew I would be good at it.  The money was tempting.  And I do love the thrill of making a sale.  But my heart was not in it.  It's not what I'm "called" to do.  I'm not sure it would provide me with the job satisfaction I desire.  Maybe it was a mistake.  Yeah, probably.  I didn't want to quit because of the whole failure thing and I didn't hate it.  Sigh.  So now I'm feeling a little lost.

Ultimately, my big question in life right now is, if I'm going to spend time and energy on a business, what is the most satisfying way to do it?  The most meaningful?  The most lucrative?  Should I just go work at Starbucks? (probably no.)  It's stressful.  I don't want to make another mistake.
Maybe I could intern?
I think I'm walking through one of those valleys where you have to just trust that God knows where you are supposed to be.  I'm trying different paths to find my way up that mountain again where I'll feel like I'm on top of the world.  I think it starts with looking at where I've been and not taking that for granted.  I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was sit down and blog.  This feels like something.

Frankly, I don't know what I'm seeking.  I remember the simple feeling of satisfaction I get when I create something beautiful.  Or when I get to write up a tutorial and someone says "thank you!" feels great.  Having my work published feels super AWESOME.  People don't respond often on the blog or my Facebook page (maybe I'm not as interesting as I previously thought), but when they do, I feel connected and so happy to bring a smile to someone else's face (at least that's what I like to think you're doing.  Smiling.)  I like that a lot.  :)
Linus...
If you pray, keep me in your prayers.  I'm so scared of making another mistake, that I've lost my courage and don't know what my gut is telling me to do anymore.  But I'm going to keep on blogging.  It feels like the only thing I can really do at this point.  Some of it might be about crafting, but you might also have to read a lot about Linus my cat, or my ovaries (which are testy lately) or 80's pop music.  It'll probably be mostly for me for a while, so I don't know if you'll even find it interesting, but if you do, let me know.  It will help keep me going until I figure things out.  There might even be a nugget of inspiration in there somewhere (for both of us.)

Thanks for reading.

The holidays are here! And, last day of free shipping!

Hope you all had a lovely holiday weekend!  Mine was great, minus the raging cold I was left with!  But there's nothing better than spending time with friends and family in these chilly wet months of November and December.  What better way to warm our hearts than the laughter and company of loved ones?

Butterball "Frankenturkey" vs. "Lean Mean" Free Ranger (who actually turned out to be quite nice.)
I have so much to share with you over the next month!  Craft show season has ended and I can finally come up for air (and get my craft on.)  Thanks again to all the folks who came out to support local handmade small businesses at these fairs.  The news from Black Friday was very sad - the state of our country is troubled indeed when people are hurt as a result of blatant greed and anger.  If any lesson is to be taken away, it should a reality check of what's really important this holiday season, and that giving your money businesses that facilitate this kind of senseless violence (it's not the first time, unfortunately) will only further excuse their greed and corruption.  Thank goodness handmade is gaining popularity!  You get to know who makes your goods and hold them personally accountable (good or bad) for what they make.  Isn't that how it should be?

(There.  I'm off my soap box!)

Indoor Snow Terrarium
I will be sharing some fairly easy and inexpensive ideas on the blog in the coming days!  Decorations for the holidays (DIY projects/tutorials), tips on how to give vintage (meaningful gifts, recycling), easy projects to make (baking, sewing, etc.) and also some pictures of Linus the cat - I am making him a bow tie because what white fluffy cat doesn't need a bow tie for Christmas???

Lastly - today is the last day to enjoy free shipping in my Etsy shop!  I will have another deal next weekend too, but the fascinators are selling fast and I wouldn't want you to miss out on the perfect gift!  ;)  So use code TURKEYFREE at checkout and I will send it your items to you directly...

Have a super duper week!  XO

Hi! Can you help?

Hi friends.  I need some feedback!  Can you take a minute to share with me your thoughts?

I've been spending time the past couple days thinking about the direction of where I want the shop to go in the next year or so, and what exactly I should be spending my time to help it grow.

You've seen me posting lately about all the new goodies I'm slowly incorporating into my line.  Some of them I've made, some of them I've designed and they've been produced by other crafters.  But basically this is me trying my hand at curating my own little retail shop that could maybe someday be a brick and mortar location.  Here's a reminder of some of the goodies...

Parisienne Girl Designs has crafted some wonderful jewelry from upcycled vintage jewels and buttons based on some of my ideas and inspirations.

A very talented gal from Gnome Made With Love made some cute little everyday hair accessories with some new and vintage fabrics and buttons.

And then there are my altered vintage clothes!  I love these because there are so many vintage fabrics and styles I would wear if they were updated just a little.

So what I'm hoping you can help me with is some feedback about these items and ideas.  What do you love?  What needs improvement?  Would you walk into this shop if you saw these things in the window?  What else would you want to see?  Is Etsy where it's at or do you like indie websites better?

I'd love it if you could take a look at my Etsy shop too.  In it's present state I'm focusing on moderately priced wedding hair accessories.  Should I revamp the shop or start a new one for the new goodies?  I want to move away from making fascinators and focus more on the veils for the wedding accessories, should I move the more casual fascinators into the new shop or leave them where they are?

Thanks guys!  Your opinions matter so much and any feedback you can provide is invaluable.  XOXO

Etsy Artist Feature: Green Pickle Shop

Let me introduce you to Aimee of Green Pickles!

She is an adorable and talented gal who hails from North Yorkshire, England.  Aimee creates whimsical, versatile, vintage inspired hair accessories.  And she is newly married!  Congratulations!

Here are some of the very pretty things that she makes and sells in her Etsy shop:

Berry Beautiful Headband
Peaches & Cream Hair Comb
Blue Bird Hair Clip
(Perfect for holiday gift giving?  Just what I was thinking.)

Aimee was kind enough to answer a few questions to help us get to know her a little better.

Tell us a little about yourself and your Etsy shop
I started my blog at the end of last year as a place to post things that inspire or excite me, and beautiful images/ ideas as well as personal stuff that makes me tick. I've always enjoyed making things and found that I adored creating whimsical hair accessories from brass findings and vintage beads so I set up my little etsy shop. I'm still finding my way in the etsy world but I have 2 stockists of my items here in the UK and my fun hobby is slowly becoming a cute little business. In my spare time I enjoy sewing and crafting and playing the piano, as well as spending time with my new husband and our gorgeous neices!

Tell us 3 interesting things about you.
I can play the piano by ear (I don't read music).
I have an old VW Beetle painted emerald green.
I love God and try and share His love with as many people as I can.

Tell us 3 uninteresting things about you.
My favourite colour is Green.
I hate slugs - they are just so slimey and horrid.
I never dry my hair with a hairdryer, I just let it dry naturally.

What are your favorite materials?
Lace, brass findings, gorgeous fabrics, cute vintage buttons and beads.

What do you like to do when you're not crafting?
Jumping in puddles when it's raining, watching old movies with homemade popcorn, taking photos of flowers or bright lights, shopping for shiny shoes, trying to bake biscuits, playing the piano and playing fun make-believe kind of games at my nieces house with my family.

What inspires you?
My mum inspires me - she passed away when I was 19 and was always so positive and busy drawing or painting or sewing things. She believed in me and taught me most of what I know about crafting. My husband inspires me because he always encourages me to get the best from myself and supports me when I feel I can't do something! God inspires me - just look at His creation, that's the best thing ever made!
