Hooray! I'm reviving the blog because I like to blog. I miss blogging. I'm not making products to sell in the Etsy shop anymore because I don't want to. I've found closing my shop and taking a break ultimately led me down a winding path to creative fulfillment.
I've been listening to Elizabeth Gilbert's new book "Big Magic" this week and it got me reflecting on my winding path as an artist. The validating message of her book is to just create - don't worry about commercial success, don't worry what anyone else thinks/make art you enjoy, and honor the muse-gift of creative inspiration when it strikes or perhaps lose it! She's a fan of finishing what you start, even if it's a half-assed effort.
Creating Deeds & Petunia began as creative outlet and morphed into a small and humbly successful business that felt pretty great. Making sales, being featured in publications, growth and recognition with the business was validating and gave me the okay to keep doing it. I found a good balance between work and life and raising two small kids it all felt good and exciting.
As things got busier and kept growing, I felt the endeavor begin to plateau. As I tried to help it continue to grow, I felt overwhelmed, dissatisfied and frankly a bit bored with it all. I wanted to make things. Beautiful and exciting things. But I didn't want to spend time that I didn't have marketing myself. I didn't want to spend money I didn't have on marketing either. I didn't want to make things worrying about what I was going to *do* with them.
I didn't want just a business. I didn't want to quit either, but I didn't know quite how to evolve and keep the creativity flowing. I liked what I created but never felt totally in love with making any of it. Close, but no cigar. I felt defeated. Eventually I closed the shop and quit blogging for a while and tried to pursue other avenues so I could let my creative endeavors be free of the burden of providing me income. But I couldn't help but feel somewhat like a failure.
Not The End, Just The Next Chapter
It turned out to be one of the best things I ever did. I eventually found my path again and learned to declare "I am an artist!" without hesitation. There were plenty of bumps and bad jobs that I quit, bad advice from self-declared experts on what I should do (now when I hear the phrase "you know what you should do is..." I run), a move across four states and many depressing months of sulking and despair over how to continue with a life devoid of creative fulfillment. In reality, I hadn't failed at my business or as a creative person for that matter, I had just outgrown it and my ideas of what success and fulfillment should look like.
Looking outside of me for validation instead of looking to create what made me happy and fulfilled and excited and challenged was a big lesson. I realized that I'm not burdened with creating a product anymore, and my artistic outlet is a lot more than just an outlet, and definitely more than just a business - though there are still some business elements I grudgingly take seriously.
What I use my creativity for now is to deliver a message to/from the Universe that comes through me, a gift that I must honor. Half the time I'm left dazed and wondering how it came out through me. But I love what comes out. This art is beautiful and terrifying and cathartic and satisfying all at once. I have already had some successes with my new endeavors, but even if I never make another dollar off of what I create it won't matter. Because it's not about the money (no one chooses art for the money!) or recognition or measurable success by our society's standards. It's so much more.
If I never started Deeds & Petunia, I never would have even picked up a camera, I never would have opened this portal of creative flow. In the end, I wasn't a failure, I was on the long and winding road to where I'm supposed to be now - making surrealist narrative portraits, taking photos and trying to find a steady way to pay the bills that won't kill my creativity. :)

Summertime and the livin' is easy.
My two girls decided to put on a fancy lemonade stand and try their hand at entrepreneurship. They went the extra mile by donning some "classy" costume hats, raiding my work room to create a hand-painted sign, and adorning the table with vintage tablecloth and fresh picked flowers to attract customers. Taking a cue from mom's make-it-fancy mentality, I'd guess. ;)
Lots of giggles and deliciousness ensued. They drank about 8 cups each. Two dollars richer, I would say their first lemonade stand attempt was highly successful.
Our recipe:
Fancy Fresh Squeezed Lemonade
1 Cup Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Cup White Sugar
Water to taste
Ice
Fresh Lavender (optional, but that's what makes it fancy)
Dissolve sugar in lemon juice in pitcher. Add cold water, mix. Sprinkle purple lavender "bits" in and stir. Serve over ice.
This is what summer is all about.

The Gift of Inspiration
| The last DIY project I did for the Austin Wedding Blog... |
Yes, it's important to free yourself up for when the moment strikes. But sometimes you've got to actively seek inspiration to find it. Even when you're tired. Here are a few of my inspiration outlets (outside of Pinterest and Country Living - my go-to founts of inspiration!), that I go to when I need to refill that creative cup.
Music.
Music has always been my number one source of creative inspiration. When I was a child, I spent countless hours in my bedroom with the radio on and I would just draw and draw. This continued through high school, but then I hit a long dry spell after I graduated. No drawing, no music, not much creativity at all (I did spend a lot of time traveling though.) When I was in my early 20's, I lived overseas in England for three years. It was an incredible experience, but at times I felt very lonely and isolated. Then I discovered Radiohead. Their music injected creativity back into my life in many ways. I felt connected to the emotion and artistry and intellectualism of this band. Now when I'm feeling a sense of disconnect, I turn on iTunes. Listening to music helps inspire me to find myself drawing and craft dabbling once again.

I had a great talk with my friend Lalalaurie today, who is a champion of creativity. She is a talented paper artist, she writes projects for the Fiskars creative team, and runs the too cute for comfort Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, finding homes for sweet and cuddly shelter kittens and raising money for the Tacoma Humane Society. I look up to her not only because of her artistry and talent, but because she is a focused hard worker. Her tenacity and drive is evidenced in her beautiful creations, photos and cohesive styling. She also gives great advice. Today it was to aim high, think big. Don't go after something unless it's exactly what I want. As I contemplate some big life choices, this was just what I needed to hear.
My Kids.
"When can we go to the park?" "I don't want to take a shower!" "She stole my toy and then hit me!" "I don't WANT to eat a sandwich for lunch!" This is part of what drains me. I was interrupted about 8 times while trying to write this one section. But when I need a to let go and have fun, I know I can always count on my kids for lots of giggles and silliness. That should be their nicknames: Giggles and Silliness. They remind me that I can't always take life so seriously. Sometimes I've got to stop and smell the roses. And then run around in circles screaming about the spider in the roses that almost touched my nose. They draw awesome pictures like this:
| It's me. I feel like it's a pretty solid reflection of how I felt that day. |
I feel like the woods are where God dwells here in the Northwest. Point Defiance Park is right in my back yard. It's my favorite place to go when I need a little nature therapy. I'm reminded how small and temporary I am, how big the world is, how my problems aren't part of the big picture. It's a great place to find peace and breathe.
Travel.
I love few things as much as a road trip. Getting in the car and exploring new territory, new people, new surroundings is incredibly inspiring. We just visited Lake Chelan, one of my favorite places. A vacation destination since I was a kid, Chelan provided us with some much needed sunshine and it was only a few hours away. I bought 20 pounds of peaches. I have no idea what I am going to do with 20 pounds of peaches, but I'm sure some inspiration will strike... ;)
Craft Blogs.
There are too many to name! A few favorites are listed on the right. I LOVE BLOGS. I love seeing into other creative people's worlds. I always find inspiration when I look through my Google reader. I also love link parties, because I get to see what other people are making and it gives me an excuse to conjure up a new DIY, craft, blog post, etc. and helps me connect with other bloggers and crafters. This post is linked to the Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop. It's my first time doing so, and I'm hoping this will be a great way to connect with others creatively. Check it out and I hope you'll leave a comment if you're here visiting via the link party!

A little Some-zine for the Vintage Wedding Fair...
I put this together for the NW Vintage Wedding Fair last month. It's about half the size of last year's zine, but still has lots of ideas and inspiration for vintage loving brides and grooms. Take a look and let me know what you think! :)

Dot obsessed.
I don't have enough dots in my wardrobe, so I decided I needed some. I found this crepe chiffon fabric at the Pacific Fabrics outlet in SoDo on mega sale.
Love the color and the drape! I'm going to use it to make this shirt pattern (c), minus the random ruffly bits and opting to leave out the tie at the neckline. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.
All of my recent sewing adventures have been fantastic. I'm learning new skills and feeling confident in taking on new challenges. What are you working on these days? Link up your projects in the comments section so I can see!

Ryan & Tyler's Wedding - Part 1
I had the pleasure of attending one of the loveliest weddings I've ever been to last weekend. My husband's nephew Ryan and his lovely bride Tyler were married in Kelso, Washington at a private location overlooking the city. All of the handmade details were stunning. Lots of vintage glass, elements of nature and personal touches everywhere. The ceremony and reception were casual, intimate and perfect. Here are a few photos from the event. I'll follow up in another post (so many pictures!) in a day or two.
These two are a match made in heaven. Congrats Ryan and Tyler! I wish you a life full of happiness together.

Finding beauty in the little things
I've been feeling rather deflated as of late. It was go go go for so long and now that I have a moment of rest, I can find no peace. The kids are nearly out of school so they are restless, which makes me restless. The budget is feeling especially tight as June begins, and as much as I wanted to take a nice long vacation this summer, it might not happen after all. The weather has been less than great (great = sunny) in the Northwest, as usual for spring, but for some reason it's really getting to me.
I woke this morning with new determination. I will find a reason to smile. I came across these photos I snapped last week when I was looking around my house for some inspiration.
What do you do when you need a pick-me-up? I'd love for you to share!

But what inspired me most was the video that introduces the book and Amy Butler herself. Some great insight into her creative process and surrounding oneself with beautiful things to inspire creativity. Love it!

Etsy Artist Feature & Giveaway! Meet Holly Storm
Meet Holly from Holly Storm Designs on Etsy! Holly is a working mother of two and hails from Jackson, TN.
Holly makes fantastic accessories like these clutch purses and wrist cuffs (LOVE):
These little clutch purses would be fantastic for a night on the town, don't you think?
I do believe this is my personal favorite:
Tell us a little about yourself and your Etsy shop:
Hello. My name is Holly Storm and I am an addict. I had always wanted to dabble a little, but never imagined that it would take over my life....
I am, professionally, in Graphic Design/Product Development. I went on maternity leave from an awful job and didn't want to go back, so I ventured off to start my own freelance business. Everything was going well until I decided that I wanted to learn to sew.
Slowly, I began to pine for my sewing machine while I was designing new logos; I began to spend every free moment daydreaming about fabrics, and all of my bedside reading became about sewing techniques. I was hooked...and quitting is for losers.
Seriously though, I feel like I should have been doing this forever. I live and dream ideas and feel so driven to create that it is not optional. My online shop is just a tiny part of that, but it's growing. I'm realizing that I can do something I love for a living without compromising either my artistic vision or my integrity. And I dig 50's and mod 60's retro.
Tell us 3 interesting things about you:
1. I have been told that I have an odd sense of humor. Sometimes to the point of offense (sorry!)
2. I can't work without my iPod, music is key.
3. I am a Science Fiction geek, and like some Fantasy. Favorite authors: William Gibson & Neil Gaiman.
Tell us 3 uninteresting things about you:
1. I am a wife and the mother of 2 children (3 if you count the man-child.)
2. Vintage patterns make me swoon.
3. Being organized makes me happy. And you don't want to see the flip side of that.
What's on your iPod right now?
I like to have a good mix of different artists shuffling and change it up frequently. Right now I am listening to mostly Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Fatboy Slim, Chokebore, Modest Mouse, Violent Femmes, PJ Harvey, Tricky, The Killers, Pixies, Robots In Disguise, and always lots of Tori Amos.
What are your favorite materials?
Cottons of every type. They are easy to work with and come in a large variety of weaves and finishes. Favorite cotton of the moment: Sateen. It's a causal fabric, but still very chic. I love the low-key sheen.
I am also loving a super-soft brushed wool that I just got in for winter. Cozy. And have started collecting vintage Cashmeres and Silks.
What colors are you loving these days?
I am full-on into winter mode, so mostly black or browns, charcoal & winter white with some deep jewel tones thrown in.
Do you have any favorite blogs/websites?
I subscribe to so many blogs, but these are the ones I keep up with most often: Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing, Elegant Musings, Already Pretty, The Blogess, Colette Patterns, Grosgrain, and just started reading Bleubird. These ladies are stylish, knowledgeable, brilliant, wise, and/or funny. Great reads.
I also subscribe to some pretty great newsletters for tips or interesting articles on sewing or fashion. My favorites are the Threads eLetter & BurdaStyle. I also can't wait for the new Colette Patterns Snippets to start.
What are your favorite Etsy shops?
As for Etsy shops...there are waaaay too many to mention! I check up on my own shop daily, then get sucked right in to checking out all of the other great shops. Etsy is a hotbed of talent right now and it is really exciting to be a part of that.
What do you like to do when you're not crafting?
Reading, playing with my kids, watching movies, fixing something on our 100 year old house, learning new techniques, getting a coffee, shopping for new inspirational materials online or in a shop. That is what I try to do when I'm not working. Usually what I have to be doing is checking emails, marketing, social networking, packing and shipping, picking up supplies, etc..
What inspires you?
Mostly the things I make are the things that I would want. Before I learned to sew, I would go shopping and think, "I would love that without those pleats, or in another color." Or I would go looking for something and not find it. Or find it, but it just doesn't work for me.
I am also inspired by materials and their patterns or drape, or by a combination of patterns. Or by a culture, or by nature, or shape. Inspiration is everywhere!
