I could sure use one of these...
Now that I'm wearing make-up on a somewhat regular basis once again (errr... today doesn't count...) My make up collection is growing again. So when Jordani, a local Tacoma Etsy gal, sent me a very sweet email a few weeks ago to share about her handmade bags, I got excited. How cute is this one? Not only pretty, but very reasonably priced! Would be perfect for my overflowing shelf of Sephora impulse buys. Go check out her shop and give her some love, dear readers!

Tacoma Is For Lovers Craft Fair Sneak Preview!
I am so excited writing this post! I've gathered up quite a few new items and am now expanding the Deeds & Petunia line to include altered vintage clothing, upcycled accessories like belts, fabric hair clips and sashes, and JEWELRY!!!
I've enlisted the help of some fabulous artists to help bring my designs to life. Parisienne Girl Designs has crafted some wonderful jewelry just for Deeds & Petunia.
A very talented gal from Gnome Made With Love whipped up these fabulous belts we've dubbed "Kenobe" belts (get it, because they're Obi belts, and everyone thinks of Obi Wan Kenobe? From Star Wars???) and some cute little hair accessories. These are more on the casual side, very affordable and great for everyday wear!
I am no expert crocheter, lord knows I try, so a friend whipped up these little bows for me. Wouldn't they be cute pinned to a dress or your hair?
This week I've been working away on the sewing machine gussying up some vintage duds. Just a little extra spice to bring them up to date and give them a little Deeds & Petunia flair!
So come see me this Sunday the 24th at the Tacoma Is For Lovers craft fair at King's Books in Tacoma, WA! I'll be there from 11-4, and you can try on all the new goodies.

Hello. My name is Holly Storm and I am an addict. I had always wanted to dabble a little, but never imagined that it would take over my life....
I am, professionally, in Graphic Design/Product Development. I went on maternity leave from an awful job and didn't want to go back, so I ventured off to start my own freelance business. Everything was going well until I decided that I wanted to learn to sew.
Slowly, I began to pine for my sewing machine while I was designing new logos; I began to spend every free moment daydreaming about fabrics, and all of my bedside reading became about sewing techniques. I was hooked...and quitting is for losers.
Seriously though, I feel like I should have been doing this forever. I live and dream ideas and feel so driven to create that it is not optional. My online shop is just a tiny part of that, but it's growing. I'm realizing that I can do something I love for a living without compromising either my artistic vision or my integrity. And I dig 50's and mod 60's retro.
Tell us 3 interesting things about you:
1. I have been told that I have an odd sense of humor. Sometimes to the point of offense (sorry!)
2. I can't work without my iPod, music is key.
3. I am a Science Fiction geek, and like some Fantasy. Favorite authors: William Gibson & Neil Gaiman.
Tell us 3 uninteresting things about you:
1. I am a wife and the mother of 2 children (3 if you count the man-child.)
2. Vintage patterns make me swoon.
3. Being organized makes me happy. And you don't want to see the flip side of that.
What's on your iPod right now?
I like to have a good mix of different artists shuffling and change it up frequently. Right now I am listening to mostly Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Fatboy Slim, Chokebore, Modest Mouse, Violent Femmes, PJ Harvey, Tricky, The Killers, Pixies, Robots In Disguise, and always lots of Tori Amos.
What are your favorite materials?
Cottons of every type. They are easy to work with and come in a large variety of weaves and finishes. Favorite cotton of the moment: Sateen. It's a causal fabric, but still very chic. I love the low-key sheen.
I am also loving a super-soft brushed wool that I just got in for winter. Cozy. And have started collecting vintage Cashmeres and Silks.
What colors are you loving these days?
I am full-on into winter mode, so mostly black or browns, charcoal & winter white with some deep jewel tones thrown in.
Do you have any favorite blogs/websites?
I subscribe to so many blogs, but these are the ones I keep up with most often: Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing, Elegant Musings, Already Pretty, The Blogess, Colette Patterns, Grosgrain, and just started reading Bleubird. These ladies are stylish, knowledgeable, brilliant, wise, and/or funny. Great reads.
I also subscribe to some pretty great newsletters for tips or interesting articles on sewing or fashion. My favorites are the Threads eLetter & BurdaStyle. I also can't wait for the new Colette Patterns Snippets to start.
What are your favorite Etsy shops?
As for Etsy shops...there are waaaay too many to mention! I check up on my own shop daily, then get sucked right in to checking out all of the other great shops. Etsy is a hotbed of talent right now and it is really exciting to be a part of that.
What do you like to do when you're not crafting?
Reading, playing with my kids, watching movies, fixing something on our 100 year old house, learning new techniques, getting a coffee, shopping for new inspirational materials online or in a shop. That is what I try to do when I'm not working. Usually what I have to be doing is checking emails, marketing, social networking, packing and shipping, picking up supplies, etc..
What inspires you?
Mostly the things I make are the things that I would want. Before I learned to sew, I would go shopping and think, "I would love that without those pleats, or in another color." Or I would go looking for something and not find it. Or find it, but it just doesn't work for me.
I am also inspired by materials and their patterns or drape, or by a combination of patterns. Or by a culture, or by nature, or shape. Inspiration is everywhere!

Etsy Artist Feature & Crocheted Lariat Giveaway!!! ZayneeDesigns
Meet Jen from Zaynee Designs!
She makes incredible crocheted accessories (including the AMAZING ruffled scarf that I custom ordered earlier this year. I get so many compliments!!!)

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your Etsy shop:
ZAYNEE is the nickname my high-school-sweetheart husband gave me 12 years ago, when we were still just friends.
DESIGNS...well I like to design fun functionals for you and your little ones. In between mommy duties. While I'm watching movies or chatting with friends.
My specialty is making scarves. I started experimenting with making scarves because I wanted something unique to wear on a Valentine's date with my husband. I wanted something ruffly to pop out of the top of my jacket and look like jewelry when I took the jacket off. Although that first item is, um, not that cool, it got me started on a scarf-making quest!
My scarves are not only functional, they wear like jewelry. They are versatile. They can be adjusted, wrapped, or draped to go with anything. They blend practicality with a touch of elegance or fancy. I make the scarf, my customers choose the fit and style!
I try to keep sustainablility in mind, so most of my materials are made from sustainable sources, castoff yarns from used-item stores or friends, or organic. During the warmer seasons, my plan is to expand my kids' clothing section. I always use repurposed linens and fabrics found during yard-sale treasure hunts. Most of the trims are also vintage, reused, or cast-offs from people I know. I also plan to add some crocheted wire jewelry to my design shop this spring, as well as more delicate crocheted items that are lightweight and wear like necklaces. I have a few items like this in my shop now, and I am planning more.
Tell us 3 interesting things about you:
I don't know if these things are REALLY interesting to other people...
1. I home-educate my three children.
2. I once played the violin, er, fiddle, in a celtic-medieval four-piece band.
3. I speak Spanish conversationally FINALLY after 7 years of studying...but I only learned because I lived next door to a Mexican woman who was a very patient teacher.
Tell us 3 uninteresting things about you:
1. I find ironing clothes relaxing.
2. I really love cloth diapering, despite the extra work.
3. My favorite little luxury is an amazing cup of coffee or a well-made cappuccino.
What are your favorite materials?
Right now my favorite yarns are the organic cotton yarns that I've discovered. They are buttery soft, so sustainable, and just luxurious. I like bamboo-blends, too. I just love the matte quality of the organic cottons.
What do you like to do when you're not crafting?
I love to read to my children. There are so many wonderful childrens' books, and I enjoy them as much as my kids do. I also like to write childrens' fantasy stories that I write and read aloud to my daughter at the same time. Sometimes she throws in her ideas, and we work it into the story together.
I like to play around on the piano and try to sing along with it (playing chords). I am not a very good singer, and I don't really PLAY piano, but I find it soothing and enjoyable all the same. (I do feel sorry for anyone who might be listening).
In the evenings my husband and I relax sometimes by watching sitcoms that we check out from the library. My current faborite funny show is Monk.
I also enjoy reading the Bible and journaling.
As a family, we try to hike as much as time and weather allow.
What Inspires You?
My inspiration comes from my kids, friends, books, and what is lacking in mass-produced stuff--handmade creativity with social and environmental responsibility. Which is why I am teaching my six-year-old daughter to crochet,sew, cook, and be creative, and why I'll equip my other two children in the same way when they get a bit older. Because lifelong skills like handcrafts can't be overrated. They are what add richness to our lives.
So I bring these made-in-between-and-during-life handcrafts to my customers.
In addition, I am really inspired by a yarn or fabric's texture and colors. Sometimes I just stand in the store and stare at the yarn until an idea comes to mind. I also browse knit and crochet books looking for stitch patterns or styles that inspire me, and I create my own idea based on those images. Functionality is a big inspiration: it has to work easier than the old stuff. I love the versatility that buttons and drawstrings bring to scarves. You can wear them in so many different ways. They are generally more versatile than your average simple scarf. Nature is also an inspiration: flowers, leaves, colors, etc. Also, the colors of different seasons.

Fascinators!
I've created some fascinators that I've fallen in love with making.
Fascinators are hair adornments, usually a clip or a comb with fancy materials like feathers, ribbons, birdcage veiling and flowers attached. Sometimes even jewels and pearls and sparkly things as well. Hair can be worn up or down, the piece attached at the side, top, back, anywhere it suits your hairstyle. There are some amazing fascinators out there! Just search Etsy, and you'll see some incredible works of art people can wear on their heads!
I love how the pieces come together and how they look when someone puts one on. The materials are gorgeous. Organic and luxurious. I get to put careful time and thought into the design. Each piece is one of a kind (at least so far!) and almost completely handsewn (a few are totally handsewn.) When someone puts it on they feel very special and beautiful.
My lovely wedding photographer friend suggested I try my hand at birdcage veils and fascinators. She even put me in touch with a client who ordered a custom piece made with vintage chantilly style lace leaves in pale pink with lovely cream and violet accents. It goes fantastic with a brown birdcage veil that brushes the cheekbone just below the eyes. My first sale! I'm very excited.
The next step is to get some amazing pictures taken (meaning I hire amazing photographer friend to take some photos, ask amazing hair stylist friend to help with hair and make up and ask lovely friend who just got married recently to put on her vintage wedding gown once again and be my beautiful model!) and get them up for sale on Etsy.

My lovely wedding photographer friend suggested I try my hand at birdcage veils and fascinators. She even put me in touch with a client who ordered a custom piece made with vintage chantilly style lace leaves in pale pink with lovely cream and violet accents. It goes fantastic with a brown birdcage veil that brushes the cheekbone just below the eyes. My first sale! I'm very excited.
The next step is to get some amazing pictures taken (meaning I hire amazing photographer friend to take some photos, ask amazing hair stylist friend to help with hair and make up and ask lovely friend who just got married recently to put on her vintage wedding gown once again and be my beautiful model!) and get them up for sale on Etsy.
